Born in Lisbon, he is also known as Saint Anthony of Padua, where he died on June 13, 1231. He belonged to the Franciscan order and is one of the most popular saints of the Catholic Church. It is a wooden sculpture with complete, albeit simplified, anatomy, with movable arms and cloth clothing, possibly dating from the 18th century, a time when these wooden sculptures with articulated arms were very popular.
Its acquisition by the hotel owners was due to a delightful coincidence: the founder of our hotel, José Nicolau Fernandes Correia, while visiting an apartment he intended to acquire, saw this statue at the bar in the living room, “disguised” with a straw hat, fake mustache, striped shirt and a small guitar. He recognized in him the Saint Anthony, the matchmaker, and “fell in love”. He proposed that he would only buy the property if it included the statue, which was accepted. The original feet and clothing of the saint, which the former owner had fortunately preserved, were subsequently restored.
